Curie Preschool
Ages 5 – 6 years

Kindergarten Program

Curie's Kindergarten program is the culmination of everything we build together — a full academic year where children who grew up in our classrooms step into their full potential as readers, thinkers, collaborators, and confident learners ready for elementary school and beyond.

Placement is based on your child's age as of September 30 and on individual readiness.

The Program

The Curie Kindergarten Difference

Our Kindergarten is not a typical preschool add-on — it is a fully realized, Virginia Standards of Learning-aligned academic program delivered by credentialed elementary teachers in a nurturing, small-class environment. Children receive the rigor of a public kindergarten with the warmth and individualized attention only a small private school can offer.

Our Kindergarten curriculum covers independent reading, multi-sentence writing, addition and subtraction — and, most importantly, a love of learning.

What Kindergarteners Achieve

By the end of Kindergarten, Curie graduates consistently demonstrate:

Independent Reading

Children read leveled chapter books independently, decode unfamiliar words, and read with fluency and expression.

Writing Proficiency

Multi-sentence stories, opinion pieces, and informational writing — with correct capitalization, punctuation, and spacing.

Math Mastery

Addition and subtraction to 20, place value, measurement, geometry, and data analysis — all through hands-on exploration.

Scientific Inquiry

Children design experiments, record data, and present findings to the class — real scientific process at age 6.

Social Confidence

Strong friendships, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to advocate for themselves and support their peers.

Elementary Readiness

Organization, independence, multi-step task completion, and a love of school that makes the transition seamless.

The Kindergarten Curriculum

Six subject areas taught by credentialed teachers — rigorous, joyful, and deeply connected.

Reading & Phonics

Structured literacy using a systematic phonics program, guided reading groups, independent reading, and daily read-alouds.

Writing Workshop

Daily writing in multiple genres — narrative, informational, and opinion — with teacher conferencing and peer sharing.

Mathematics

Hands-on number sense, operations, geometry, measurement, and data — aligned to Virginia Kindergarten SOL standards.

Science & STEAM++

Full project-based STEAM++ units: engineering challenges, life science, earth science, and technology integration.

Social Studies

Community, maps, history, cultural celebrations, and civics — building a sense of identity, place, and responsibility.

Specials & Enrichment

Weekly music, visual art, physical education, and library — plus STEAM++ enrichment projects that extend classroom learning.

"My toddler has been attending this pre-school for over 6 months now and we are pleased with the transition we have noticed in her. My toddler has shown tremendous improvement in terms of social skills and being able to articulate her needs better. Being able to learn some of the core life skills and values at a tender age in a supportive, caring environment ensure kids develop to be better human beings and I can certainly say in that regard, this preschool has helped nurture her skills while inculcating good habits. Overall, it just doesn't feel like a mere transaction but an extended family that really cares about the overall growth of the child. The staff are very supportive and ensure child's overall needs are taken care of and my child is eager to be at the preschool."
